How to Calculate Sod Quantity

Sod is sold by the piece, roll, or pallet. Most residential projects order by the pallet (450 sq ft). Always add at least 5% for cuts, curves, and waste.

Sod Calculation Formula
Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
Area with Waste = Area × 1.05
Pallets = ⌈Area with Waste ÷ 450⌉
Rolls = ⌈Area with Waste ÷ 9⌉

Sod Installation Tips

  • Till and grade the soil 2\"–4\" deep before laying sod
  • Apply a starter fertilizer (high phosphorus) to encourage root development
  • Lay sod in a brick pattern (staggered rows), not in a grid pattern
  • Water immediately after installation and keep moist for 2–3 weeks
  • Avoid laying sod when temperatures are above 90°F or below 40°F

? Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
A standard pallet of sod covers approximately 450 square feet. Some suppliers use 500 sq ft pallets. Individual sod rolls typically cover 9 square feet (1.5 ft × 6 ft).
How much does sod cost?
Sod costs $0.30–$0.80 per square foot for materials, or $150–$360 per pallet. Installed prices (including labor) range from $1.00–$2.00 per sq ft, or $450–$900 per pallet depending on your region.
How long does it take to install sod?
A experienced crew can lay 500–800 sq ft per hour. A DIYer with proper preparation can typically install 200–400 sq ft per hour. Prepare the soil first: till, grade, and apply starter fertilizer before laying sod.
When is the best time to lay sod?
Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass) are best laid in early fall or spring. Warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine) establish best in late spring through summer when soil temperatures are above 65°F.
How long until I can walk on new sod?
Avoid heavy foot traffic for 2–3 weeks after installation. The sod needs time to root into the soil. Light foot traffic is generally fine after 2 weeks. Mow for the first time when the grass reaches 3.5 inches tall.
