Landscape & Earthwork Calculators

Accurate material estimates are critical for landscaping and earthwork — bulk materials like gravel, mulch, and topsoil are sold by the cubic yard or ton, and over-ordering is expensive to haul away. Calculate exactly what you need.

About Landscape & Earthwork Calculators

Landscaping and earthwork projects involve large volumes of bulk material that must be planned carefully. Gravel, mulch, topsoil, and fill dirt are all measured in cubic yards — one cubic yard fills a space 3 feet wide, 3 feet long, and 3 feet deep. Bulk suppliers typically sell these materials loose by the yard or in bags at a significant per-unit premium.

Paver and hardscape projects require a layered base system: typically 4–6 inches of compacted gravel base, 1 inch of bedding sand, and then the pavers themselves. Getting the base right is more important than the surface — a poorly compacted base leads to settling, cracking, and weed intrusion. These calculators help you estimate each layer independently.

Mulch depth significantly affects performance. A 2-inch layer provides basic weed suppression; 3 inches is the recommended depth for most applications; 4 inches is used in areas with aggressive weeds. Fresh mulch decomposes and settles over time, so replenishing annually with 1 inch of new material maintains the desired depth without excessive buildup that can harm plant crowns.
