How to Calculate Deck Boards

Deck boards are purchased in linear feet. To find how many you need, divide the deck area by the board coverage per linear foot, then add waste for end cuts and defects.

Deck Board Formula
Coverage per LF = Board Width (in) ÷ 12
Linear Feet = (Deck Area × 1.10) ÷ Coverage per LF

Deck Building Tips

  • Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners — regular screws will rust
  • Leave 1/8\"–1/4\" gap between boards for drainage and expansion
  • Set concrete footings below the frost line to prevent heaving
  • Check joist span tables for your lumber species — don't guess
  • Install ledger flashing correctly — improper flashing is the #1 cause of deck rot

? Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build a deck?
Pressure-treated wood decks cost $15–$25 per sq ft installed. Cedar decks run $20–$35/sq ft. Composite decking costs $35–$60/sq ft. These are total installed prices including materials and labor.
How many deck boards do I need?
Divide the deck area (sq ft) by the board width in feet, then multiply by 1.10 for waste. A 200 sq ft deck with 6" boards needs: 200 ÷ 0.5 × 1.10 = 440 linear feet of decking boards.
How many joists do I need for a deck?
Joists are typically spaced 16" on-center. For a 12-ft wide deck, you need 12 ft ÷ 1.33 ft = approximately 9 joists plus 2 rim joists. Always add blocking at the mid-span for spans over 8 feet.
Do I need a permit to build a deck?
Most jurisdictions require a permit for decks attached to the home or raised more than 30" above grade. Check your local building department. Permits typically require stamped plans and inspections at footing, framing, and completion stages.
What is the best decking material?
Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable (15–20 yr life). Composite (Trex, TimberTech) costs more upfront but lasts 25–30 years with minimal maintenance. Ipe hardwood lasts 40–75 years but is expensive and difficult to work with.

💡 Pro Tips

Always add 10% extra to material estimates to account for waste, cuts, and mistakes.
